What is PPI?

The mis-selling of payment protection insurance (PPI) has become the biggest single financial scandal in UK history and while millions of consumers have already reclaimed their mis-sold premiums there are millions more who have yet to make a claim.

PPI was sold by the banks and other financial institutions as a way for consumers to ensure they could still meet the payments on any loan, credit card or mortgage they might have if they were forced to come out of work through accident, sickness or unemployment.

So how was it mis-sold?

  • It was added to finance agreements without the knowledge of consumers.
  • Customers were often not told the PPI policy was an optional extra.
  • Many customers were not asked if they already had adequate cover in place.
  • Customers that received sickness benefit from their employer.
  • Customers were not advised of the cost of the policy as a separate item.
  • Many were sold a policy when they were not working.
  • Customers were often not warned about exclusion clauses within the policy which stopped it from paying out.

What should I do if I think I was mis-sold PPI?

You are not required to use a claims management company to make your complaint, you can go direct to your financial adviser or product provider (Investment manager, bank etc.) and if unsuccessful to the Financial Ombudsman Service – for free. Alternatively, if your financial adviser is no longer trading, you are able to submit your complaint, yourself, to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme for free.

You must be aware that if you have any outstanding liabilities with the lender they may off-set an offer of compensation/redress against this. You may need to pay any 3rd party fees from your own funds should this happen.

Alternatively Conclusive Financial Ltd. can provide you with a comprehensive service that deals with the process from start to finish, relieving you from the pressure of having to make the claim yourself. As a Conclusive client, you will benefit from having a dedicated case handler who will take your claim through the entire journey. Get in touch today.
